About API and BHILS

TARGET AREA:

Jhabua district has the highest percentage of tribal population in Central India and is one of the country's poorest regions. Illiteracy, disease outbreaks, drought, soil erosion and overpopulation resulting in migration make this district one of the most challenging regions for development work.

TARGET POPULATION:

The Bhil tribe is a proud and ancient ethnic group inhabiting the Western part of Central India with the highest concentration in Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh State. Well over 1.5 million of them live as marginal farmers in almost 2000 villages. The members of the Bhil tribe possess a vast array of rich customs and traditions. Their colourful festivals and ceremonies are outbursts of joy and foster their sense of community. Yet they face the challenge of living in a hostile environment ravaged by drought and outbreaks of diseases. Poor infrastructure and lack of academic institutions further aggravate their situation.

COLLABORATING ORGANIZATIONS:

Aktionsgemeinschaft Partner Indiens, e.V. (API)
is a German Non-Governmental Organization whose members have visited Jhabua district many times. Among them are doctors, lawyers and agriculture specialists who have been advising the Indian partners in their respective fields. API looks for supporters for financial assistance as well as for expertise.

Bhil Health Initiatve and Literacy Society (BHILS)
is a registered NGO based in Jhabua. Its members are dedicated individuals who belong to the Bhil tribe and co-ordinate and carry out the programmes and projects on the ground..
